Ice Safety!

Ice is nice... at least it can be. Frozen lakes are picturesque and home to a variety of winter activities! Before running out on the ice though, keep in mind these safety tips!

1. Measure the ice- Anything less than 3 inches is NOT SAFE! 4 inches is the recommended thickness for ice-fishing, walking, and other recreational activities.

2. Get a visual- Watch out for slushy areas, seams, and uneven cracks; these may indicate weakened ice.

3. Check the color- Clear, blue, or green ice is usually the safest ice to walk on. White ice usually has air or snow trapped inside it and can weaken it.

4. Have a plan- Go out on the ice with a buddy and discuss a rescue plan beforehand.
